In an age of seemingly endless electronic games, it's rather nice to explore the more quirky of hands on games.

Happy New Year.
No I've not flipped, but 31st October is new year's eve on the celtic calender, so a happy new year to all interested in things Subbuteo, or even those who are completely baffled!!!!

Kicking screen.
When doing conversion kicks, penalties or drop goals, unless one has an assistant to hold a cloth behind the uprights, the ball invariably gets temporarily lost. The Subbuteo rugby ball is quite small, so I have made a simple screen to allow play to continue without the search the ball scenario!
It is a panel of 6mm MDF with a 2x1 batten screwed on the bottom and a piece of 10mm thick black foam 430mm x 340mm double sided taped to the board.
I have used this screen to good effect many times and have not had to go searching for the ball once, therefore meaning no more hold ups for the match.

Scrum!
Well now the world cup is over, I guess I can stop setting my alarm clock for unearthly hours of the day!!!
It would seem from watching all the matches that the scrum wastes a lot of time, so what they need is a Subbuteo scrummer and five playing pieces of each teams colours set up as per my revised rules. Then when the ball comes out the real ball is given to that pack and the game continues from there. No risk of injury or dodgy penalties being awarded, and the game flows much better, no problem!!!

Testmatch.
I came upon this game on my travels, so bought it for its novelty value!
The playing surface was very worn although I will probably be able to do something with it, so I decided to cut a " cloth " out of a piece of 9mm MDF and paint accordingly.
Thus!!
The game set up and ready to play. The first darker green area counts as 1 run the next 2 runs and the third 3 runs. The boundary counts as a four and the two little triangles by the boundary corners count as a six if you manage to get the ball in them!!! The batting gantry has a catch device that acts as the wicket keeper, and the front of the bowling ramp has a cup which acts as a catch by bowler if the ball should end up in there. The game is easy to pick up and play but does not have the same skill level as Subbuteo cricket. It is good fun though and easier to get people up and playing.
